All midwives Health Visitors and support staff in NHS Lanarkshire are trained to support breastfeeding, the NHS Lanarkshire infant feeding team provides a community based breastfeeding aditional support service, offering telephone support and/or home visits to support breastfeeding families at home.
Support provided by the service is always in addition to support from Midwives and Health Visitors who retain responsibility for women and babies. The service runs on an opt out system and contacts all women in Lanarkshire who are discharged from hospital breastfeeding and offers either telephone support or a home visit as appropriate.
Ongoing support for the next 6 weeks or so can then be provided in the form of telephone support from the “community mothers” volunteer peer supporters. The “community mothers” also work along side the support service in the maternity unit, neonatal unit and breastfeeding support groups in the localities.
“Breastfeeding support service assistants” (BSSA) also support midwives to deliver “Infant Feeding Workshops” these are a relaxed and informal workshop provided to couples to support informed choice around infant feeding.
