Under The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 you have a right to know how public services are organised and run.

This means you can find out about NHS 24, including:

  • what services are provided
  • how much services cost
  • goals and targets
  • how well NHS 24 is doing
  • how to make a complaint

How to find information on NHS 24

The publication scheme was made under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. It’s designed to help you find all the information published by NHS 24.

The publication scheme is divided into sections. Under each section you should find all the information that NHS 24 has published on that topic.

How to make an FOI request

If you cannot find the information you’re looking for on the NHS 24 website, you can complete a FOI form to request it.

You will get a response to your request within 20 working days. You may be charged for some requests but you will be informed of this. The charge will be discussed with you before your request is finalised.

The freedom of information (FOI) form is for FOI requests only. Do not use this form to ask questions about health conditions or illness.

If it’s not urgent, contact your GP. Phone 111 if your GP practice is closed.

Exemptions to a FOI request

Some information can not be published in a FOI request. This includes confidential and personal information like medical records. These exemptions are listed in the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

If any of the information that you have requested is exempt, this will be explained in the reply to your request.

What to do if you're unhappy about the response to your FOI

If you’re unhappy with the response to your FOI, you can ask for an internal review of the decision. To do this, you must email NHS24.FOI@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk.

If you’re still unhappy after the internal review, you can appeal. You can do this through the Scottish Information Commissioner.

You should not use the FOI form to request personal information about yourself.

To access your medical records, you can make a subject access request. This comes under data protection legislation.

You can contact your GP practice to make a subject access request for your GP records.

You should contact your local health board if you want a copy of your:

  • medical records
  • other personal information held by a hospital or NHS clinic

NHS 24 only holds information about your contact with NHS 24. You can request information about this through an online form.
