Breathing Space

Breathing Space is a free and confidential phone service for anyone in Scotland over the age of 16 feeling low, depressed or anxious.

Our thoughts and feelings can sometimes get in the way of coping with everyday life. Breathing Space provides a safe and supportive space through:

  • listening
  • offering advice
  • providing information

You can phone the service free on 0800 83 85 87, Monday to Friday, 6pm to 2am and 24 hours at weekends. 

Or, you can speak to an advisor using our webchat which is available:

  • Monday to Friday – 6pm to 2am
  • Saturday and Sunday – 4pm to midnight

Who is the service for?

Breathing Space is for anyone in Scotland over the age of 16, feeling low, anxious or depressed.

How Breathing Space can help

Trained advisors at Breathing Space are available to listen and offer information and advice. The service is open in the evenings and weekends when family, friends or GPs may be unavailable.

Talking about your feelings is the first step towards getting the help that you need. Breathing Space aims to provide:

  • help at an early stage to stop problems getting worse
  • information and advice if you don’t know where to turn to
  • empathy, understanding and hope

As well as a website, which contains information on mental health topics, the Breathing Space phone service is free and confidential.
